Portrayingurbanfunctionalzonesprovidesusefulinsightsintounderstandingcomplexurbansystemsandestablishingrationalurbanplanning.Althoughseveralstudieshaveconfirmedtheefficacyofremotesensingimageryinurbanstudies,couplingremotesensingandnewhumansensingdatalikemobilephonepositioningdatatoidentifyurbanfunctionalzoneshasstillnotbeeninvestigated.Inthisstudy,anewframeworkintegratingremotesensingimageryandmobilephonepositioningdatawasdevelopedtoanalyzeurbanfunctionalzoneswithlandscapeandhumanactivitymetrics.Landscapesmetricswerecalculatedbasedonlandcoverfromremotesensingimages.Humanactivitieswereextractedfrommassivemobilephonepositioningdata.Byintegratingthem,urbanfunctionalzones(urbancenter,sub-center,suburbs,urbanbuffer,transitregionandecologicalarea)wereidentifiedbyahierarchicalclustering.Finally,gradientanalysisinthreetypicaltransectswasconductedtoinvestigatethepatternoflandscapesandhumanactivities.TakingShenzhen,China,asanexample,theconductedexperimentshowsthatthepatternoflandscapesandhumanactivitiesintheurbanfunctionalzonesinShenzhendoesnottotallyconformtotheclassicalurbantheories.ItdemonstratesthatthefusionofremotesensingimageryandhumansensingdatacancharacterizethecomplexurbanspatialstructureinShenzhenwell.Urbanfunctionalzoneshavethepotentialtoactasbridgesbetweentheurbanstructure,humanactivityandurbanplanningpolicy,providingscientificsupportforrationalurbanplanningandsustainableurbandevelopmentpolicymaking.
