Asmajorurbanagglomerationswithstrongurbanization,globalbayareasareseldomdetectedandcomparedindetailregardingthespatiotemporalevolutionoftheirurbanexpansion.Inthiswork,aframeworkwasappliedfordetectingandcomparingthespatiotemporalevolutionofurbanagglomerationsinfourmajorbayareas:theSanFranciscoBayAreaandtheNewYorkBayAreaintheUS,theTokyoBayAreainJapan,andtheGuangdong-HongKong-Macau(GHM)BayAreainChina.Landsatimagesfrom1987,1997,2007and2017wereemployedtoderivethefoururbanbayareasusingtheobject-orientedsupportvectormachine(O-SVM)classificationmethod,andamulti-scalespatialanalysismethodwasappliedtodetectthelandscapecharacteristicsandtypesofgrowthintheurbanexpansions.Theresultsshowedthat:(1)theO-SVMclassificationmethodexhibitedahighaccuracyinurbanareaextraction,especiallyforclassifyinglarge-scaleimages;(2)theurbanareasoftheSanFranciscoBayArea,theNewYorkBayArea,theTokyoBayAreaandtheGHMBayAreafrom1987to2017expandedfrom1686.82,5315.93,3765.09and605.71km2to2714.7,8359.18,5351.06and7568.19km2,respectively,withacorrespondingannualaverageincreaseof1.60%,1.52%,1.18%and8.82%;(3)theGHMBayAreahadthelargestexpansionareaandrateamongthefourbayareas;(4)boththeSanFranciscoBayAreaandtheNewYorkBayAreasuccessivelyformedamulti-nucleiribbonmodel,andtheTokyoBayAreaandtheGHMBayAreaformedamultinuclearfan-shapedmodelandatrianglezonalexpansionpattern,respectively;and(5)thespatialpatternsofurbanexpansionsinthesebayareasshiftedfromoutlyingtoedge-expansionandinfilling,inwhichtheTokyoBayAreaandtheNewYorkBayAreaexperiencedthelargestinfillinggrowth,andtheSanFranciscoBayAreafollowedcloselythereafter;allwereaheadoftheGHMBayArea.Theseresultswillbehelpfulfortheunderstandingandsustainabledevelopmentofthesebayareas.
